Understanding the Gunas

Understanding the Gunas

In Ayurveda, everyone’s personal well-being comes down to 2 things: Dosha and Guna.
The Gunas: Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas; are a little harder to pin down. Unlike Dosha, you can’t use physical indicators to determine your Guna, and balancing them requires more than just diet and exercise. The three Gunas describe three different states of mind, and in order for a person to be happy and balanced, they must cultivate the expression of the Sattvic guna. The more Sattva you cultivate, the less the other Gunas will interfere.
Meditation is the only way to truly balance your Gunas, but before you can begin to cultivate Sattva, you have to understand and recognize the Gunas in yourself.

Tamas

Tamas
Tamasic people are lethargic and depressive. They tend to do less, be sleepy and are ignorant. When Tamas is our leading Guna, it’s very hard to find motivation, cleanliness, spirituality or intellectual elevation. The god Shiva is associated with Tamasic energy.
I remember  during my college time that our cultural tendency to be tamasic is evident in our obsession with the supernatural, monsters, zombies and vampires. This is because Tamas is associated with the lower, baser plain of existence or the “underworld.”
Rajas
Rajas is characterized by aggression, passion, and a fiery nature. For Rajasic people, self-interest is the number one priority. They are very taken in by worldly needs, money, accomplishments, and greed. Rajasic people tend to lack altruism and empathy. The god Brahma is associated with Rajasic energy.
The idea of expansion, imperialism and industry are all born of Rajasic energy. One one hand, Rajas promotes progress. On the other hand, it often does so at the expense of human goodness. Rajas is the dominant Guna of the middle world and is between Tamas and Sattva.
Sattva

Sattvic people are healthy, happy, and pure of heart. They enjoy helping people and seeking out knowledge. They aspire to lead lives of comfort, pleasure, and intellect. If you have a naturally Sattvic nature, you are acutely aware of pleasure, happiness, and comfort and you seek to promote those things in your life. You also seek to lessen any pain, sadness, or negativity. The god Vishnu is associated with Sattva.
Artists, inventors, intellectuals and creators tend to be more Sattvic people. They see the value in cultivating a life of the mind and often enjoy lives of relative comfort and ease. The realm of the gods, or “heaven” is an elevated, purely Sattvic place.
The three Gunas are pretty clear, but it gets a little more complicated when you consider that Sattva isn’t actually the goal of meditation.
Ultimately, the goal of meditation and yoga is to rise above the Gunas altogether, but for the vast majority of us, that is unattainable in this lifetime. Embracing Sattva is seen as a good first step towards transcending our human nature, but Sattva is still very much connected to this world. People who embrace Sattva are attracted to pleasure and repelled by pain, and it holds them back from seeking true freedom from the world.
I’m neither educated nor enlightened enough to speak to what it means to transcend our humanity, but I know this much: transcendence is the ultimate goal.
I hope I was able to shed some light on what the Gunas describe and mean. I know it took me a long time and lots of reading to get even this basic understanding.

how Ayurveda treat schizophrenia ?

World Schizophrenia Day, observed on May 24 every year, is a day to raise awareness about schizophrenia and reduce the stigma attached to this mental disorder.
Schizophrenia - is a disorder that affects a person's ability to think, feel and behave clearly.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 2.4 million American adults, or about 1.1 percent of the population age 18 and older in a given year have schizophrenia.

The signs and symptoms of schizophrenia may vary from person to person, however, people with this condition usually experience persistent symptoms of what is called psychosis. These include:

Delusions - false beliefs that are not based on reality.
Hallucinations - this happens when a person sees, hears, feels or smells something that is not actually there.
Disorganised speech and behaviour
Bizarre or hyperactive behavior

In Ayurveda Schizophrenia can be understood under "Unmada disorder" . The term Unmada stands for Samudbhrama i.e perversion. Because, in this ailment, the intellect, mind and memory get perverted.

When we look into the pathology through Ayurvedic text we find , all three Doshas vitiation , afflict Hrudaya (heart), which is the abode of intellect of a person having less of Sattva (intellect), and while being located in the Manovaha ( brain )  srotas (Channels carrying Psychic impulses), they afflict the mind.
Majorly through Ayurvedic text we find connection between brain = heart = Gut axis in respect with mental disorder. intake of Viruddha (mutually contradictory), Dushta (polluted) and Ashuchi (impure) foods and drinks afflict forms Aam ( toxins) in GUT system , Affliction of the mind because of fear and sudden happiness and  Unwholesome physical and mental acitivities directly afflicts the heart ( satva)  and brain.

It seems both heart and gut have a mind of their own and besides communicating with the brain about their activities they  also  helping in brain development , reducing depression and just increasing the level of well being of a person.  Ayurvedic Treatment tried to balance all three minds individually as well as together.

Ayurvedic medicine is a holistic system of medicine that treats mental disorders from mild stress to severe condition.
Ayurveda Therapies for Schizophrenia :

1.       Abhyanga – Medicated oil application from head to toe followed by medicated water bath

2.       Shirodhara – Third eye therapy

3.       Shiro-vasti – Filling of medicated oil over head for 30-45 minutes with bag

4.       Intake of ghee to stimulate the mind, intellect, memory and consciousness

5.       Application of thick ointments

6.       In addition, other Ayurvedic treatments recommend different kinds of nasal medicines mixed with oil.  Face and head massage with medicated oil is also recommended.

Treatment of schizophrenia helps in reducing, and even entirely eliminating symptoms of schizophrenia. A combination of medicines and emotional support can help people win the fight against schizophrenia. While the medication assists the brain to restore its usual balance of chemicals, the emotional and community support can help patients be more informed and aware about their condition.

Natural home remedies for tooth ache

Good dental health involves daily activities. Brushing, flossing, an herbal rinse, and a healthy diet with very little sugar are vital to preventing problems. It is also wise to refrain from smoking and to eat plenty of citrus fruit containing vitamin C. Also, be sure that your body is getting enough calcium and vitamin D to maintain healthy teeth.

No matter how much care you take with oral health, however, toothaches always seem to arrive without notice at the most inopportune moment, usually in the middle of the night or on a weekend, when finding medical relief is quite difficult. Even when dental treatment is available, it can be so expensive that finding the necessary funds may stress the budget. For this reason, you might want to try some simple natural remedies to see if they can effectively reduce the infection or pain. Some of the simplest are below:
Simple Natural Remedies for Toothache Relief
  • Place an ice cube next close to the gum and let it slowly dissolve.
  • Place a tea bag on the affected tooth.
  • Put clove oil on the gum near the tooth or chew some whole cloves.
  • For stronger teeth and less bleeding, chew Babool bark.
  • Mix clove oil with pepper powder, and place on the cavity.

Home Remedies for Dental Health

When tooth pain is excruciating, it may be necessary to change the diet to get some relief. First, eat the softest foods possible, such as oatmeal or rice. Do not consume yogurt, however, as this may make the situation worse. Eat all foods at room temperature to prevent additional pain generated by the cold or heat. Then, try some of these home remedies:
  1. Boil asoka tree bark and swish the cooled liquid in the mouth.
  2. Rinse the mouth with hydrogen peroxide and spit it out twice daily.
  3. After cleaning the teeth thoroughly, dip a cotton ball into almond extract and place next to the injured area.
  4. Fresh garlic gloves may be placed on the tooth for a few minutes to reduce pain but must be removed quickly to prevent blistering the tissues.
  5. Rinse the mouth with salty water several times a day.
  6. A rinse made from boiling guava leaves may be held in the mouth for ten seconds to soothe tooth pain.
If pain persists or swelling occurs, it is time to seek medical intervention from your doctor or dentist. They can determine the root of the problem and direct you to the proper treatment.

Is Ashwagandha a potent herb against covid crisis ??

Benefits of Ashwagandha (withania somnifera) against covid crisis.

Researchers have found that natural compounds from Ashwagandha have the potential to be an effective anti-Covid-19 drug.

In Sanskrit, Ashwa means horse and Gandha means smell. Ashwagandha roots smell like a horse, which is where it gets its name, ashwagandha because of this reason it said that it gives horse power to a man. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera, fam. Solanaceae) is commonly known as “Indian Winter cherry” or “Indian Ginseng”.Withania somnifera (Ashawagandha) is very revered herb of the Indian Ayurvedic system of medicine. It is used for various kinds of disease processes and specially as a nervine tonic. Considering these facts many scientific studies were carried out and its adaptogenic / anti-stress activities were studied. Rasayana is described as an herbal or metallic preparation that promotes a youthful state of physical and mental health and expands happiness.

Ashwagandha is an analgesic that soothes nervous system from pain response. The involvement of pain mediators; prostaglandin and 5-hydroxytryptamine in analgesic activity of Ashwagandha was studied by pretreatment with paracetamol (100 mg/kg, ip) and cyproheptadine (10 mg/kg, ip).
