how Ayurveda treat schizophrenia ?

World Schizophrenia Day, observed on May 24 every year, is a day to raise awareness about schizophrenia and reduce the stigma attached to this mental disorder.
Schizophrenia - is a disorder that affects a person's ability to think, feel and behave clearly.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 2.4 million American adults, or about 1.1 percent of the population age 18 and older in a given year have schizophrenia.

The signs and symptoms of schizophrenia may vary from person to person, however, people with this condition usually experience persistent symptoms of what is called psychosis. These include:

Delusions - false beliefs that are not based on reality.
Hallucinations - this happens when a person sees, hears, feels or smells something that is not actually there.
Disorganised speech and behaviour
Bizarre or hyperactive behavior

In Ayurveda Schizophrenia can be understood under "Unmada disorder" . The term Unmada stands for Samudbhrama i.e perversion. Because, in this ailment, the intellect, mind and memory get perverted.

When we look into the pathology through Ayurvedic text we find , all three Doshas vitiation , afflict Hrudaya (heart), which is the abode of intellect of a person having less of Sattva (intellect), and while being located in the Manovaha ( brain )  srotas (Channels carrying Psychic impulses), they afflict the mind.
Majorly through Ayurvedic text we find connection between brain = heart = Gut axis in respect with mental disorder. intake of Viruddha (mutually contradictory), Dushta (polluted) and Ashuchi (impure) foods and drinks afflict forms Aam ( toxins) in GUT system , Affliction of the mind because of fear and sudden happiness and  Unwholesome physical and mental acitivities directly afflicts the heart ( satva)  and brain.

It seems both heart and gut have a mind of their own and besides communicating with the brain about their activities they  also  helping in brain development , reducing depression and just increasing the level of well being of a person.  Ayurvedic Treatment tried to balance all three minds individually as well as together.
